I couldn’t believe it. I was working Poppet with John, the dog trainer. We had Poppet doing a sit-stay on the sidewalk a block from my house. John and I were standing about 15 feet or so away from her. Then a squirrel slowly came across the street — steps, stop, steps, stop — straight toward Poppet. My dog, who delights in chasing squirrels in our backyard, was very obedient. Good girl! She held her sit-stay. But the squirrel kept coming, its eyes meeting with Poppet’s. I swear, it was going to come straight up to the dog and touch noses. Finally, when the squirrel was about 4 feet away from Poppet, John moved forward. Although the squirrel didn’t look insane, no point taking a chance that it would attack my 8 lb dog. John kept saying, “I’ve never seen anything like that before.” Me neither. I’ve seen squirrels that aren’t really scared, but they keep their distance all the same.
Wish I’d had my camera. It was really something to see. And Poppet was such a good girl.
