up against the wall

Yesterday on the Christian novelists’ email list I belong to, at least three writers said something like, “This is my get serious day.” Me, too. We can only procrastinate for so long and then we reach panic state and have to write like there is no tomorrow if we are to have any hope of making our deadlines. Apparently, I’ve got lots and lots of company this month. (I may not have noted here that I asked and received an extension, but the date is now one that cannot be pushed back any further. This is it!)

I can’t say that I achieved anything close to what I needed yesterday. The writing was agonizingly slow, and I feel like I’m searching for every word in a fog, groping about blindly and completely confused about where I’m going. Finally, when I felt like I just couldn’t take any more and there wasn’t a creative fiber left in my being, I went to Barnes & Noble and found a cure. I spent money on books! {{grin}} I found some excellent research books for my next project, set in the 1950’s, as well as a novel I was missing from a series I’m going to start reading next. I had books #1 and #3 and found #2. I also bought a couple of soundtracks (I write to music and many of my favorite “writing CDs” are movie soundtracks).

This morning, I’m the guest at a bookclub. They read The Forgiving Hour this past month, so I’m there to answer questions and hopefully gain encouragement, too. And when I get home, I simply must work on my presentation for a women’s retreat I’m speaking at on Saturday. So my manuscript will have to wait another day before I can dig back into it. {{sigh}}
