In a year when we have seen, unlike any year I can remember, the effort to totally eliminate Christ from Christmas — in truth, to eliminate Christmas completely and make the 25th of December only a secular holiday (a contradiction since holiday means “holy day”) — I decided to research the song, The 12 Days of Christmas. Some believe the song has Christian roots beginning in the 16th Century. Others want to debunk this entirely. The best article I found regarding the song was on The Voice.
At one point, the author, Dennis Bratcher, says: “Perhaps, when all is said and done, historical accuracy is not really the point. Perhaps more important is that Christians can celebrate their rich heritage, and God’s grace, through one more avenue this Christmas.”
To which I say, Amen.
