What was your favorite book as a child?
Even now, I’m not one to reread very often. There are always more book adventures on the horizon. Why repeat an adventure? So my favorite books as a child were the ones I was currently reading. Loved Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. And the Boxcar Children books by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Each of those books fed my imagination and my dreams.
What book did you read that first made you want to be an author?
Stillmeadow Road by Gladys Taber. The book is one of many Gladys wrote as a diary of her life restoring a 200-year-old Connecticut farmhouse during the 60s and finding deep-rooted peace in the long, arduous process. She found elegance and warmth in the ordinary and the broken. I sought every book she wrote at the library and purchased several, too. She wrote in such a way that I felt the water dripping from a broken pipe, sensed my own fingers stained from the blackberries she picked.
What was the last book you read, just for fun?
The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister. I like this online description: “The (cooking school) students have come to learn the art behind Lillian’s soulful dishes, but it soon becomes clear that each seeks a recipe for something beyond the kitchen. And soon they are transformed by the aromas, flavors, and textures of what they create.” The characterization sang.
What upcoming release are you most looking forward to reading?
I’m looking forward to reading the next Becky Melby novel…as soon as a publisher snatches it up.
