Ode to Socks

On Monday of this week, over on Inspired by Life and Fiction (where ten authors of Christian fiction have a whole lot of fun), Angela Hunt wrote a post about the velveteen pants she loves to much, and ended it with an Ode to My Stretchy Velveteen Pants. We all loved it, including Tamera Alexander who the very next day wrote about her five latest finds on Amazon, ending with a two line poem about socks.

Well, I bought myself some new socks this week. Every so often, I try buying a pair of slippers to keep my feet warm. I end up letting them die a slow death in my closet until I finally give them away or toss them. Instead, I live in socks. Pretty much year round. I love socks.

And so, not to be outdone, with thanks to AI (ChatGPT), I give you this Ode to Socks:

ODE TO SOCKS

Oh, humble socks, so oft ignored,
Yet daily heroes on the floor.
You cradle toes in warmth and grace,
A soft embrace in life’s cold chase.

No morning starts without your touch,
A snug cocoon we love so much.
From cotton light to woolen thick,
Through every step, you do the trick.

Oh, argyle bright and simple gray,
You bring both cheer and calm each day.
Striped or spotted, long or short,
Faithful friends of every sort.

You brave the wear, the stretch, the tear,
Through muddy trails and cushioned chairs.
And though the dryer claims its prize,
Your single twin we eulogize.

So here’s to socks—of every kind,
The fuzzy, thin, the loose, the tight.
Unsung champions, warm and true,
Oh, dearest socks, we honor you!

  1. Hi, Robin,

I enjoyed your delightful poem about socks. I, too, am a sock person. Every Christmas, my daughter knows to get me a new supply of socks for the coming year.

Many years ago, I wrote the following funny poem about socks. It was published in several magazines. May it bring a smile to your face.

    SOCK IT TO ME!

The Law of Compensation says what I sow I reap,
So, naturally, I try to sow with care.
But when it comes to washing socks, this law just goes awry,
For though I sow in twos, I reap in spares.

FYI, December 4th is National Sock Day! 🙂

Blessings from a fellow lover of socks,

    MaryAnn

  2. I bought some peanuts socks with snoopy and one with Charlie Brown, I was happy to find them in the no show style. In Arizona this is very important.
