I rented The Nativity Story from Netflix and watched it with my mom last night. I enjoyed it just as much as in the theater. The music is beautiful and the filming exquisite. Once again, I was forced to consider what is so easy to miss in the Bible versions. As a person raised in western culture in the 20th Century, I don’t always realize how dangerous it was for Mary to say Yes to God. I forget that she could have been stoned to death for her pregnancy. I forget that Joseph risked his own reputation by not accusing her of sleeping with another man. The Nativity Story isn’t a fast paced adventure. It is a quiet look at the beginning of the greatest story ever told.
