Bright Star, the movie that tells the tragic love story of John Keats and Fanny Brawne, arrived from Netflix this week, and I finally got around to watching it tonight. In many ways, it reminded me of Becoming Jane, another tragic love story, that one about Jane Austen. The time setting is the same (early 1800s), though the things that keep the lovers apart was different.
Bright Star is, according to the movie blurb, inspired by Keats's poetry and the couple's letters to each other during their three year romance. Both the poetry and the letters were a beautiful part of the film. The costuming is lovely too.
Of course, telling you it's a "tragic" love story alerts you to the heartbreak ending. Keats died at the age of 25, believing he was a failure as a poet/writer.
I enjoyed Bright Star and gave it a 4 out of 5 stars rating.
