I can’t let this day go by without wishing everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day. My great-grandmother was Mary Emeline Malone, and I’ve always had a love of all things Irish. I’ve dreamed for years of taking a trip to Ireland. So far, life has interfered with the achieving of that dream, but someday…
When I wrote my Coming to America series, I chose immigrants from England, Sweden, and Ireland because that is my background. (When I added a fourth book, I made the immigrants from Germany as I’d run out of roots of my own.) In His Arms was the book with the Irish heroine, and I named her after my great-grandmother. I heard Mary’s Irish lilt in my head for months after finishing that book.
And so I will leave you now with this old Irish blessing:
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
