IDOL GIVES BACK WEEK!
Wow! News Corp is going to give up to $5 million in the Idol Gives Back. I was washing the dishes as the show started and missed how much per phone call Ryan said they would give up to that total amount. Quick math: I think it must be 10 cents per call as that would be 50 million calls for $5 million.
Songs tonight were of inspiration, about hope for the world, about changing things for the better. No mentor tonight. The Idol contestants were on their own.
Change the World: Chris R. picked a good song for his voice. (Can anybody tell me what movie this Eric Clapton song was used in? I know it’s something I’ve seen a number of times but can’t think what it was.) All the judges loved it and thought it really took him up a notch.
There Will Come a Day: Melinda turns a country song into a gospel anthem. It was “church on Idol.” And in addition to me just loving the words of the song, I thought she was spot on from start to finish. Simon called it a “vocal master class” and I would certainly agree.
Imagine: Good choice for Blake’s particular voice. Not a “wow” performance for me, but good. I think it was Simon who said the problem was that it was sort of flat, not in key/tone but of a straight line variety. The same all the way through.
I Believe: Lakisha has lost me. Not that her voice isn’t great, but she fails to impress me lately. Is it because Melinda and Jordin are so great that she pales? I don’t know. Randy called her performance pitchy, and Simon said she shouted a lot of it.
The Change: Very nice performance, Phil. I wished he’d thrown in a bit more country flavor with this Garth Brooks’ song, but I still liked it. The judges all liked it, too. And Simon agreed with me, wishing for more country. (And Simon doesn’t like country!)
You’ll Never Walk Alone: I happen to love this song, and immediately envision Mother Superior in Sound of Music when I hear it. Well, Jordin is no Mother Superior — in appearance. But she’s got the chops to sing it. A little shaky at the start but as it built, wow! Audience was on their feet.
My favorites tonight? Here they are, in order:
