Country week! Yee Haw! Unlike some other bloggers who discuss American Idol, I’m a country fan. Big time. However, I was not looking forward to tonight after the weak performances of last week’s Latin show.
To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement.
Where the Blacktop Ends: Phil Stacey came out and really performed. He came to life. No pitch problems. I got to see the star I’ve always felt was "in there" somewhere. Way to go, Phil. You are a country boy.
Broken Wing: Next up was Jordin Sparks. Simon said, based on this performance, he thought Jordin could win the top spot. I agree. She was fabulous.
Something to Talk About: My, oh my. Sanjaya. What can I say? He did look okay in that scarf over a permed hairdo. But the singing. Awful. Simon lit into him with both barrels. "Utterly horrendous!" I didn’t even think Simon was too harsh with that analysis, although he got some expected boos from the audience.
Jesus Take the Wheel: Lakisha’s turn. She chose to sing the song that won Carrie Underwood a number of awards. Big mistake. Lakisha is no Carrie. Wrong song for her, and she sang it poorly. I don’t think Lakisha will go the whole way.
Mayberry: Chris R. didn’t seem to connect with his song choice either. It wasn’t awful but it wasn’t great. I would say he’ll be in weakened position.
Trouble is a Woman: Melinda chose a song I didn’t know, but I thought it was great for her. Another great performance. Fantastic, and even Simon loved it (and we all know he doesn’t love country).
When the Stars Go Blue: And finally came Blake. The vocal was okay (a bit pitchy), but Blake is not country. His moves felt all wrong. His clothes felt all wrong. Rather a flat performance, IMHO.
Based on tonight’s performances, I would put Lakisha, Chris, and Sanjaya in the bottom three, and I would send Sanjaya home.
My three favorites this week: Phil, Jordin, and Melinda. Yee Haw!!
