So here we are, down to the 8, and Jennifer Lopez was the mentor. Salsa night. FYI, I enjoy Lopez more as an actress than as a singer, so will be interested to see what sort of mentoring she gives the contestants.
Melinda started out the show with Sway (a song I fell for when it was in Shall We Dance). I disagree with Simon on this one. He finally didn’t like a performance by Melinda, but I liked it. I also think Melinda was wrong when she said she isn’t sexy. She looked absolutely fabulous in black dress and heels.
Lakisha’s Conga is good but not great. I do marvel at anybody able to sing that fast and get the words right. Simon didn’t care for it. Called it safe.
Chris R. sang Smooth. Great song choice. Way to go, Chris. This was a terrific performance. The judges all liked it too.
Hayley was up next with Turn the Beat Around. Showed off her legs in hot pants (short short shorts). The background singers seemed to be carrying her for the most part. So not impressed. A lot of strutting her stuff and more shouting than singing.
Phil sang Maria Maria. I like his voice (cracked toward the end though), but this wasn’t a favorite song. Not an exciting performance. I think he could be in the danger zone. (Tee hee. His daughter has a stuffed cow that she calls Simon Cow.)
Rhythm is Gonna Get You got Jordin. She usually impresses me, but this time just didn’t do it for me. Okay but no wow factor.
Blake chose to sing I Need to Know. I really liked this performance. I felt the song fit his voice well. The judges (especially Simon) thought it was the best of the night.
And last came Sanjaya. Besame Mucho. Some points for actually singing some Spanish on Latin night. One of his better performances, good enough to keep him around another week.
Overall, Latin night proved tough for the kids. Even the performances I liked will not be favorites to be remembered. Results tomorrow should be interesting. I would send Hayley home, but I think Phil is in a weakened position.
