Are you not blogging about AI this year, or did I just miss something on your page?? I am an American living in [foreign country] and look forward to your critique of the show a day before we can watch it over here. You are the only review I agree with every time!! Please tell me you are going to be writing again this year!!!
The email made me feel both pleased to know someone loves my recaps and always reads them and guilty for having fallen down on the job. Truth is, between writing like a fool, a class I'm taking one evening a week plus the Olympics (nightly), the final season of LOST (Tuesdays), and American Idol 9 (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays through March 11, then Tuesdays and Wednesdays), I got a bit lazy about my blogging. Too busy studying, writing, and watching stuff, both live and on my DVR. I promise to do better.
But here is my quick assessment in a nutshell of this week's first performances — I was not impressed. There was not a single performance from either night that made me want to pick up the phone and call or text in my vote. That's sad because there are a number of these gals and guys who have terrific voices and interesting back stories.
I'm sure nerves played a part in the less than stellar performances, but the biggest part was poor song choices. There were pitch problems and there were singers who tried to go beyond their ability. Their voices were straining to go higher or lower than they were able, and I was wincing and shaking my head.
Let me also say that Casey James was probably my favorite guy from Wednesday night, and he had to put up with a lot of joking and sexual innuendos from the judges. I thought that was patently unfair to him. He took it with charm and good graces but I still think it was wrong of the judges to put him (and the viewers) through that. Aren't they the ones who are always saying, "This is a singing competition"? They should remember that.
Ellen DeGeneres is turning out to be a great judge. She adds kindness and humor to the panel, and perhaps it is she who is bringing out the best in the other judges (the aforementioned jests with Casey James notwithstanding).
My impressions are still subject to change over the next two weeks but here are a few contestants who I believe could make it into the final 12:
We'll know tonight if any of the above will be removed from the mix.
