I'm not going to give a whole rundown for the two hour final, but will try to hit the highlights. The show was filled with both highs and lows, the lows often coming from the comics who scraped the bottom for jokes, i.e. Kimmel referring to Simon's parents as Rosemary and Satan Cowell. Now that was low and not funny.
I do always love seeing the Idol contestants singing with some of their own favorites. David Cook with ZZ Top was great. Brooke White with Gordon Nash was very good, too. Loved hearing Jason Castro sing Hallelujah again. I was reminded in the six final girls why I disliked listening to Amanda so much; she was dreadful, can't hardly carry a tune, and not pleasing to watch either.
Jordan Sparks looked and sounded grand. The Gladys Knight and the Pips thing was cute. (If you didn't see it, there is just no way to describe it adequately; it involved Ben Stiller, Jack Black, & Robert Downey Jr. Order the video on iTunes and the money goes to charity.)
Carrie Underwood was awesome and looked fabulous. When Simon told her early in Season 4 that she would not only win but be the most successful of all the Idols, he was so right. She is the one Idol whose albums I buy the moment they release. No question.
Another group sing and a George Michael appearance and finally the two hour wait is over. First, nice apology from Simon to David C, saying his comments last night bordered on disrespectful. Classy turn.
The new American Idol is …
DAVID COOK! He took 56% of the 90+ million votes (won by 12 million votes). I admit, I thought Archuleta would win (all those teens texting in their votes), but I'm glad it was Cook. He's ready now. He's more versatile. And I'm going to download his Music of the Night from the Andrew Lloyd Weber week. David A. will have his own success, I believe, without getting the crown.
I loved how overwhelmed he was, the guy who is here because he came to the try outs to support his brother. This is one very likable guy.
