A number of years ago, with the nest empty and the house all too quiet on Christmas mornings, I began seeing a movie on Christmas Day. This year, I saved Finding Neverland for this special occasion.
Oh my. There is a good reason why this movie has an A rating almost across the board, from both critics and the public alike. What I don’t understand is why so few people have indulged themselves. Box office receipts should be ten times what they are. If you haven’t seen this film, go, go, go. It is beautiful, tender, loving, endearing, heartbreaking. I laughed. I cried. I fell in love with a film as I haven’t in a long, long while.
Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet are wonderful, and the child actors are superb. They never seem to be acting but just being the children they’re supposed to be. And it is fun to see Dustin Hoffman of Hook playing a part in this movie, too.
And for anyone who has the misfortune/good fortune to live with a writer of fiction without understanding this strangest of creatures, perhaps you will get a glimpse into their imagination and understand them a little better. If nothing else, you’ll at least know you’re not alone.
I will be first in line when this movie comes out on DVD.
