Without further ado, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to my guest for the Scavenger Hunt, Kimberley Woodhouse. I first met Kimberley when we were both at a conference in Boise, and I so enjoyed getting to know her. She’s a “neighbor” of this Idaho gal now that she’s moved to Montana. I know you’re going to love reading her unique hunt post as you will love her books.
Here’s Kimberley’s professional bio
Bestselling author Kimberley Woodhouse has more than fifteen books published. She is an avid reader, a lover of history, and passionate about music and Bible study.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, AIR BATHS, AND MICE
Since my latest book came out in August, I’ve received hundreds of emails from readers. And for the most part, they’ve all mentioned two things: a certain scene with a mouse, and an especially beloved character. Since mice freak me out, I’ll let you read the story for yourself and focus here instead on the beloved character.
If you’ve read any of the author notes in my novels, you probably know that I love research. I think most authors do—it’s one of the things that fuels our passion in writing. (And also distracts us many times. Like Dug in the Disney movie Up—we stop to research a certain fact that we need to use in the story and before you know it, we’re down another research trail—squirrel!)
One of the awesome things about getting to dive into research is how fun it is to stumble upon facts that surprise or amaze us. I found one of those gems while researching Benjamin Franklin for The Patriot Bride.
This great man was one of our founding fathers and I had the great privilege of using him and good ol’ George Washington in my story. But to use these prodigious historical characters, I had to read a lot of research about them. You can imagine that there were thousands of things I learned about each of these men, but I want to focus in on one particularly quirky trait of Mr. Franklin’s.
Now first, I want you to put yourself back into the time period of the birth of our great nation. Before iPads, laptops, smartphones, or even electricity. People spent a lot of time visiting each other in person. News often took months to reach England and vice versa. You get the idea.
Back to Benjamin Franklin. While most of us have seen portraits of him and think he was perhaps on the chubby side, he was actually quite stocky and muscular. And the man loved to swim!
But the fact that fascinated me—and frankly made me giggle—was that he loved air baths. What’s an air bath? Well… ahem… to put it in laymen’s terms: this great man—indeed an integral part of the formation of this country—liked to sit naked in front of his open windows to let the fresh air wash over him.
Now… I don’t know about you. But the first time I read that little tidbit I thought that his neighbors must have thought the man was out of his mind. A loon. A crazy. I mean goodness, this was during an era when even real baths weren’t taken often. It was scandalous to be seen without your outer garments not to mention without your undergarments.
But in Mr. Franklin’s defense, his reasoning was sound and well ahead of his time. It just goes to show that even the most brilliant people of an era might be a “little crazy” to the rest of the world but will go down in history for all to admire. To find out more, you might just have to read The Patriot Bride.
