Spending time with my daughters is always high on my list of favorite things to do. Seeing a Broadway musical is also high on that same list. For my birthday yesterday, I got to do both! And last night was, absolutely, without question, The. Best. Birthday. EVER!
I spent the day writing, but then it was off to a local Hawaiian restaurant for dinner (yum!) with my daughters and their terrific husbands. When we were full to the brim, we jumped into our cars and drove to the Morrison Center for the Performing Arts to see Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz. I have owned the CD from the musical since late 2003 or early 2004, but this was my first opportunity to get to see it in person. I have been counting off the days to my birthday ever since we got the tickets for the show.
In case you are unfamiliar, Wicked the musical is based upon the Gregory Maguire novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West . I read it in hard cover back in 1995 or so. Maguire has made a career of writing new twists on famous fairy tales/stories. As a lifelong fan of The Wizard of Oz, I couldn’t resist reading Wicked. At which point, I became a fan of this new twist on the Wicked Witch of the West. (By the way, I do a “wicked” Wicked Witch as she melts. Just ask any of my friends who’ve seen this little performance.)
The original Broadway cast (the recording I have) starred Idina Menzel as Elphaba (the green witch) and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda (the good). If you watch the TV show Glee, you’ve seen both of these ladies perform as guest artists. Love their voices. (The photos are of the original actresses, but the traveling cast was also great.)
But back to last night: The show was amazing. No wonder Entertainment Weekly dubbed it “the best musical of the decade.” At the end, I was on my feet, fighting tears, shouting, “Bravo!!! Bravo!!!” I smiled all the way home. Smiled as I let out the dog and got ready for bed. And I woke up smiling this morning. Take my advice. If you get a chance to see this show, go.
Yep. Best. Birthday. EVER!
