Some years ago, I attended a college graduation ceremony (remember when they had those in a normal fashion?), and while sitting in the bleachers, I had an epiphany. I’d always said I was going to get a college degree (something I didn’t do at the usual age) “when I had the time.” And sitting in those bleachers I realized, as with anything else, I would never have the time. If this was something I wanted to do, I needed to just do it.
I went home, got on line, and began the registration process. Three months later, I started my first classes online. In the terms that followed, I took most classes online, although a few were hybrid. Credits began to add up (takes awhile when you’re a part time student). I loved the experience of being in school again. It really is different at my age than when you’re a teenager. And since I’m going to school just for the love of learning and not because I’m wondering what I’ll do with my future, that puts a different spin on things too.
Then a family crisis reared its head, one that lasted for many months. It was a stressful time. So I set aside my education goals for a while, and let the Lord take me through that season. Oh, how faithful He is!
Well, I’m about to begin school again!! I am back to being back to school! At this point, one of my goals is to be the oldest graduating student in my class, whatever class that ends up being. Trust me, it won’t be difficult to achieve that goal.
I’m looking forward to this fall term. I’m only taking one class, but it’s one I know I’ll love: American history from the end of the Civil War up to the present. I’ll be studying the Gilded Age, the Progressive era, the Great Depression, the World Wars, and the Cold War, among other things.
Wouldn’t it be grand if I discover an idea for a future book during my studies?

Have a wonderful school year! You will learn fascinating things, and I’ll pray that some of the things you learn will spark book ideas. I admire your courage and tenacity!
Thanks, Suzanne. I really have enjoyed this adventure so much, although after taking a little time off, the thought of writing novels while keeping up with classwork and studying for tests is a bit daunting. But I did it before, so I know I can still do it.
Good for you! Going back to school later in life is an ambitious decision. I am sure you will get many ideas for future writings from your history class plus fulfill your desire to earn a degree.
I recently finished reading from your Legacy of Faith series, Who I Am With You and am halfway into the next in the series, Cross My Heart and have truly enjoyed both. Good luck in your new “adventure”.
So glad you are enjoying the books in the Legacy of Faith series. They are very dear to my heart.
I think you are so brave to do this! All the best to you and may God’s light be a beam for you to follow, especially in the days you don’t want to study! I promise you if you are inspired to do a book, I’ll buy it!
Beth, no worries. My writing is my full time job which is why college is part time. So you will definitely have more books to read coming up.
I hope you have an excellent term and learn amazing things. It would be could if this class sparked a novel idea!
Thanks, Nicole. All the way back to high school, history was a favorite subject of mine. I never get tired of studying it.
Congrats Robin! I am really happy for you and on the sidelines cheering you on. I admire your courage and will put you on my prayer list.
I love your books and prayed the Lord would lead me to a good Christian author like you. And He did!
Have a great Fall and just enjoy your studies.
Keep writing!
Blessings,
Vicki Willis ( Shelby N.C.)
Vicki, what a sweet thing to share with me. Thank you.
Congratulations Robin! I went back to school part time when I was 38 to get my Master’s Degree. It took me 4 years, but it was well worth it. So hang in there!
My daughters both got degrees in their forties. I am … cough, cough … older than they were and doing it much more part time. But I’ll get there eventually.
So happy for you. I am 80 and still taking The Great Courses just for my own enrichment. Keeps a person young. Just started one on drawing. Blessings on your journey.
Oh, the Great Courses I’ve listened to have been wonderful. And you’re right. Continuing to read and learn keeps a person young and our brains sharp.
Congratulations Robin, for knowing what you want fulfilled, and going after it! I love your books, and am so glad you’ll be continuing writing!
Thanks, Shirley. And yes, I’m definitely writing away. Am just wrapping up my next novel and beginning to think about the next one I’ll start writing soon.
What wonderful news. I know you will do well.
My son (54) is starting at Tyndale Theological Seminary next month as a mature student. He is so ready. Where it leads only God knows at this point. Online at this point but if and when the Seminary opens he will be on campus.
How wonderful for your son. What fascinating studies are ahead of him, I’m sure. To go deep into biblical studies on a daily basis will be wonderful.
