I get asked the question in the title of this post a lot. And to some degree, the answer is yes. I am in all of my characters, not just the heroines. After all, they come out of my imagination and my experiences and my research.
But it is more true that my characters are very much individuals and often very different from me, even in those stories where I’ve used my life as inspiration. It is a wonderful moment in the creation of a book when a character takes on a life of her own. I love it when my protagonist begins telling me her story instead of me making it up. (Yes, I’m sure that sounds like I am certifiable, but it’s true.)
I’m still proofing and revising my manuscript before sending it to my editor. Feeling pretty good about the story, although I’m never completely confident at this stage. Maybe I’m never completely confident at any stage. That’s just the way it is for most creatives I know.
Okay, back to proofing and polishing.
