Today I went with my daughters and five grandchildren to see Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. I didn’t know much more about the movie except that it’s based on the first three books in a children’s series and that it was supposed to be on the dark side. I hoped I would enjoy it. I didn’t know I would laugh so much.
Yes, it is dark. It begins with the parents of the three children dying (off screen). That element upset my one grandson who is ultra-sensitive to such things. Two other adults perish later in the film (again off screen and not obvious to younger children). Yes, most of the adults are rather clueless and don’t listen to the children when they should. Normally that irritates me in the movies. (I’m not sure that is a good message to give kids: Adults don’t know what’s best.) But for some reason it didn’t bother me in this movie. Not sure why. I just know I loved this movie. Jim Carrey was in top form (and not easily recognizable). The child actors were excellent. And the baby… She is the best. Of course, her dialog is printed on the screen, but it will keep you in stitches.
